Taiora QEII on Travis Road in New Brighton is Christchurch City Council's indoor pool and gym complex, built after the earthquakes and popular with families across the east side. There's a 25-metre lap pool for serious swimmers, a warmer leisure pool with a lazy river, a splash deck and water adventure playground for toddlers, and the standout 130-metre hydroslide (kids need to be at least 107cm tall to go on it). On Sunday afternoons an inflatable obstacle course takes over part of the pool too.

Little ones are well looked after in the toddler pool and splash area, while older kids and teens will want the slide and lazy river. There's also a spa, sauna and steam room (16 and over), a hydrotherapy pool, and a full gym with group fitness classes if the grown-ups want a workout while someone else watches the kids, or after. Red Café on site does coffee and food, and there's free parking right outside plus bike stands.

It's a good all-weather option since everything is indoor, and quieter times tend to be weekday late mornings if you want to avoid the crowds. Bring togs, a towel and coins for the lockers, and expect to stay an hour or two rather than just a quick dip.
