Woolston Playcentre is a parent-led early learning centre on Portman Street, running weekday morning sessions for children from birth to five. It's not a drop-in play centre in the usual sense: mums, dads and caregivers stay and play alongside their kids, with activities set up across areas like messy play, sandpit, dress-ups, gardening, painting and carpentry with real tools. The programme follows the Te Whāriki early childhood curriculum, and because it's run as a co-operative, families get to know each other properly rather than just passing through.

New families are welcome to come along for a look before committing, with a few free visits offered ahead of enrolling. It suits parents keen to be hands-on with their child's early learning rather than simply dropping them off, and it's a good way to meet other local families if you're new to Woolston or new to parenting altogether.
