Somerfield Playcentre is a parent-led early childhood centre on Studholme Street in Somerfield, running weekday morning sessions for babies through to preschoolers. Unlike a drop-in play space, parents and caregivers stay and get involved with their own kids, working alongside other whānau and a coordinator rather than dropping the kids off with teachers. It suits families keen on a hands-on, community model of early learning rather than a straight childcare option.
Inside there's a reading corner, a family/home corner for dramatic play, and an arts and craft area, while the outdoor space has room to run about plus quieter, leafy nooks for hide and seek. Several afternoons a week there's also a dedicated Space Session for babies, which parents say is a good way to meet others with kids the same age.
This isn't a casual visit-anytime spot: you'll need to get in touch to arrange a look around, and most families go on to enrol rather than attend once-off. It's run as a not-for-profit, so costs tend to be lower than private childcare, and 20 Hours ECE funding applies for eligible three to five year olds.
