Halswell Playcentre, based at St Lukes Church on Halswell Road, is a parent-led early childhood group where you stay and play alongside your child. Rather than a drop-off centre, everyone from grandparents to first-time parents pitches in to help run sessions, and it suits babies right through to the year before school.

Kids get stuck into sandpit and water play, dress-ups and face painting, real carpentry tools, baking, gardening and messy craft, with music, dancing and outdoor climbing thrown in. Activities change daily, so a Tuesday session looks different from a Friday one. Morning sessions run most weekdays, with a couple of extra afternoon slots too.

Because it's a cooperative rather than a straight drop-off centre, it's best to email or ring ahead to arrange one of your three free visits before enrolling.
