Tai Tapu Playcentre is a parent-led early childhood centre based in the local hall on Old Tai Tapu Road, out past Halswell. Instead of dropping the kids off, parents and caregivers stay and play too, with sessions built around sandpit digging, messy play, gardening, carpentry with real tools and baking. It suits babies right through to school age, so there's plenty for crawlers as well as kids old enough to help mix a bowl of muffins.
It's run by the families who attend, so there's a strong sense of everyone chipping in together, and new whānau are welcome to pop in and see a session before deciding to join. The centre has recently had a new outdoor space added, handy for kids who want to be outside digging or riding trikes. You don't need to book to come and have a look, though joining as a member means committing to help run sessions alongside other parents.
