Lincoln Playcentre, on North Belt in Lincoln township about 20 minutes southwest of Christchurch, is a parent-run early learning centre for children under school age. Rather than dropping the kids off, parents stay and take turns running the session, so you might find yourself supervising the sandpit one week and leading the baking table the next.
Kids get stuck into painting, dress-ups, carpentry with real tools, gardening and messy play, with activities changing daily. Tuesday to Friday mornings are open to under-fives, and Monday has separate Babies Can Play and SPACE sessions for babies under two.
New families get three free visits before deciding whether to enrol, so there's no pressure to commit straight away. It suits parents keen to be hands-on rather than just dropping off, and it's a good way to meet other families with young kids in the area.
