Halswell Miniature Trains runs through Halswell Domain, with volunteer members of the Canterbury Society of Model and Experimental Engineers giving kids rides on tiny trains along a track off William Brittan Avenue. The loop takes in a small lake, bridges and short tunnels, and on sailing days you might spot model boats cruising past too. Closed shoes are required for the ride, and it only operates on Sunday afternoons, so it's not a spontaneous weekday stop.

It's best suited to toddlers through primary-age kids, with the very young usually held on an adult's lap rather than riding alone. There's a playground for both smaller and older children nearby, plenty of grass for a picnic rug, and a food truck often on site for drinks and a snack. Rides are cheap, cash or EFTPOS, and you don't need to book, just turn up and queue.
