Catnap Cafe on Colombo Street in Sydenham is the South Island's first cat cafe, run as a foster home for rescue cats alongside a regular coffee shop. You book a session in the cat room (usually around 15 to 18 cats living there at a time) then sit and hang out with them for about an hour, separate from the café's kitchen and seating area. Kids need to be five or older to go into the cat area, and adults must stay with them.
Coffee, cabinet food and hot drinks are all vegan, and food and drinks are ordered separately from the cat room session. Bookings are recommended since sessions run to a set length and fill up, especially weekends. There's parking around the back off Wordsworth Street if the street parking on Colombo is full.
