The Christchurch Tram loops through the central city from Cathedral Junction on Worcester Street, calling at 18 stops on a heritage route that takes about 50 minutes end to end. Trams come round every 10 to 20 minutes and your ticket is good for the whole day, so you can hop off at the Botanic Gardens, Margaret Mahy Playground or New Regent Street and catch a later one when you're ready to move on.

There's no minimum age but kids do need an adult with them, and drivers double as guides with live commentary that's more entertaining than you'd expect from old wooden seats and a bell. Prams fold and stow on the bigger trams (a couple can even hook on outside), though smaller trams can't take them, so ask at the ticket office if you've got one with you.

Outside-facing seats aren't weatherproof, so this one's better suited to a fine day than a rainy one. Most families treat it as an easy way to get their bearings in town before setting off on foot, rather than the whole day out.
