Alice Cinemas is a small independent cinema on Tuam Street, in the SALT district of central Christchurch. It's best known for arthouse, cult and festival films rather than mainstream family fare, though animated titles and family movies do turn up on the programme now and then, so it pays to check what's screening before you head in. Two cosy, retro-style theatres and a big DVD rental library to browse in the foyer give it a different feel from the big chains.

It suits older kids and teens best, and makes a good option on a wet afternoon when you want a couple of hours out of the house. There's a licensed bar for snacks and drinks, and tickets can be booked online. Street parking nearby is limited but there are several paid carparks close by.
