Matatiki Hornby Centre on Smarts Road is Christchurch's newest pool, library and customer service hub, built beside Kyle Park in Hornby and open since 2024. It's a genuine one-stop trip: swim, borrow a book, top up a metrocard and grab a coffee without leaving the building.
On the pool side there's a lane pool for older kids and confident swimmers, a warmer teach pool for lessons, a shallow toddlers' pool with dump buckets for the little ones, a spa pool for ages 3 and up, and a hydrotherapy pool for gentle rehab and relaxation. On Sundays an inflatable obstacle course takes over part of the pool hall, and standard pool entry covers it (though kids need to pass a swim test to use it).
The library next door has a dedicated kids' area, a PlayStation 5, VR gaming and free wifi, handy if older siblings want a break from the water. There's a café for coffee and a snack, plenty of parking and bike stands right outside, and stepless, wheelchair-friendly access throughout. No booking is needed for a casual swim, but lessons and aqua classes do need to be booked ahead.
