Clarkville Playcentre is a small, parent-run early childhood centre out in rural Clarkville, just north of Kaiapoi, sharing its patch with the local school. It's a proper cooperative: mums, dads or caregivers stay and play alongside their kids rather than dropping them off, with everyone pitching in to run the sessions.
Days are made up of open-ended play - sandpit, painting, carpentry with real tools, gardening, dress-ups, music and messy outdoor stuff - and the activities change often. It suits babies through to school age, with younger and older kids mixing together, which the coordinators say helps little ones learn from the bigger ones. Sessions run a few mornings a week rather than daily, so it's worth checking which days before you head out.
New families are welcome to pop in for a few free visits to see if it's a good fit before joining, and there's no need to book ahead. It's a low-key, hands-on option if you like the idea of getting involved yourself rather than just watching from the sidelines.
