The Christchurch Gondola in Heathcote Valley carries you up Mt Cavendish for sweeping views over the city, Lyttelton Harbour and, on a clear day, the Southern Alps. Cabins seat up to four, and the ride to the summit takes about ten minutes each way, so it works well for prams and buggies too.
At the top there's a short walking track for little legs and longer trails for older kids after a proper stretch. The Christchurch Discovery Ride, an audiovisual trip through the region's history, is included in your ticket, and the Red Rock Café and gift shop mean you can grab lunch or a coffee before heading back down.
There's no minimum age, but kids need to be with a paying adult, and you don't need to book ahead. Parking at the base station is free, and most families allow an hour or two for the whole visit.
