Ashley Playcentre is a small parent-run playgroup in Ashley, a rural North Canterbury settlement just outside Rangiora, for kids from birth to five. It's roughly half an hour's drive north of Christchurch. Unlike a drop-off daycare, parents stay and play alongside their kids, taking turns to help run each session.
Sessions run on weekday mornings with free play across art, books, sand and outdoor areas rather than a set timetable. There is also a Friday afternoon Babies CanPlay session for newborns to one-year-olds, useful if you are after company with other new parents as much as playtime for bub.
You'll need to enrol to attend regularly, though new families can visit a few times first to see if it's the right fit. It's a co-op, so it suits parents happy to muck in rather than just drop off and leave.
