Waiau Playcentre is a small, parent-run early childhood centre on Clarence Street in the North Canterbury town of Waiau, out towards Hanmer Springs and Kaikōura. It's a proper drive from Christchurch, so it suits families living or holidaying in the area rather than a quick day trip.
Sessions are for under-fives, and instead of dropping the kids off, parents or caregivers stay and play alongside them. Expect open-ended, child-led play such as art, dress-ups, sandpit and messy activities, with the focus on giving little ones room to explore rather than following a set programme.
Numbers are small and the community is close-knit, which suits parents after a relaxed, low-key morning out rather than a big attraction. New families are welcome to three free visits before deciding whether to enrol.
