Mt Somers Staveley Playcentre is a small, parent-run early childhood centre on Pattons Road in Mount Somers, out towards the foothills about an hour and a half from Christchurch. It follows the Playcentre model, so mums and dads stay and play alongside their children rather than dropping them off, and everyone helps run the sessions.
Kids can dig in the sandpit, get on the swings, do some gardening or carpentry with real tools, bake, dress up and get generally messy, with activities changing from one session to the next. It suits babies through to preschoolers, and being a small centre it has a close, everybody-knows-everybody feel. No booking is needed, just show up on a session day, though becoming a member does mean pitching in with the running of the place.
