Mayfield Playcentre is a small, parent-run early learning centre in the rural Mid Canterbury settlement of Mayfield, out towards the Rakaia Gorge. It's not a drop-and-leave centre: mums, dads and other caregivers stay for the session and take turns running the play, so you'll be building sandcastles, doing carpentry with real tools or getting stuck into art and baking right alongside your child.
It takes tamariki from birth to about six, with sessions running on weekday mornings during term time. New families get three free visits before deciding whether to enrol, so there's no need to book. Expect a relaxed, hands-on community feel rather than a polished facility, plus a free parenting education programme for those who join up.
