Quail Island Pirate Hunt is a school holiday treasure hunt run by Black Cat Cruises, starting with a short ferry ride from B Jetty in Lyttelton across to Quail Island. Kids get a treasure map and go hunting for six hidden pirate posters dotted along the island's walking tracks, writing down what they find as they go.
Once the crew checks the completed map on the return sailing, kids get a handful of chocolate coins, and there's a bonus prize for the best dressed pirate on each return trip plus a draw to win an Akaroa Nature Cruise. It suits primary-aged kids and up, though littles can tag along too since under 5s travel free.
You choose a departure time in the morning and a return time later in the day, so you can do a short half day or turn it into a full day out exploring the island. Bookings are recommended well ahead as it sells out most years, and you'll want good shoes since the tracks can be muddy.
